Phuket's shrines, locally known as "Aam" or "Saan Jao," are the vibrant spiritual and cultural heart of the island. Far more than just places of worship, they are living museums that tell the story of Phuket's rich history, shaped significantly by the influx of Chinese immigrants in the 19th century. These shrines are central to community life and are the epicenters of the island's most famous celebration, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival.

The act of participants in the Vegetarian Festival uniformly wearing white attire for the entire 9 days and 9 nights holds significant meaning
Beyond witnessing the elaborate street processions, both tourists and locals in Phuket enjoy visiting various Chinese shrines across the island (especially in the Old Town area) to pay respects and pray for blessings. Each shrine is beautifully adorned with lanterns and ceremonial flags, creating a particularly lively atmosphere both day and night. It's an excellent opportunity to admire the unique architecture and pay homage to the deities enshrined at each temple for good fortune and prosperity.
Along the routes surrounding the main shrines, such as Jui Tui Shrine and Bang Neow Shrine, you'll find countless "Jae Houses" (temporary vegetarian eateries) and street food stalls offering hundreds of types of vegetarian dishes. These range from traditional Phuket cuisine specially adapted to be vegetarian, to a variety of unique vegetarian snacks and desserts that can only be found during this festival period. It truly is a paradise for food lovers and an unmissable activity for anyone visiting during the festival.
Throughout the 9 days and 9 nights, Phuket town is enveloped in an atmosphere brimming with faith. People don white attire, yellow flags adorn every corner, and the wafting incense smoke along with the sound of firecrackers create a unique, enchanting ambiance. It's the best time for capturing cultural and street life photography.
The First Day of the Festival: The "Go Teng Pole Raising" ceremony is simultaneously performed at every shrine in the evening. This ritual officially marks the beginning of the festival and is an invocation for the deities to descend and reside.
The Last Night of the Festival: The "Farewell to the Deities" (Song Phra) ceremony is another spectacular highlight. All streets in the Old Town are filled with crowds and the resounding crackle of firecrackers, bidding farewell as the deities ascend back to the heavens. It is a deeply impressive and powerful sight.
Many shrines will organize the "Go Hian Ceremony," a ritual for expelling misfortune and bad luck. Participants walk across a specially constructed bridge to ward off negative influences and illnesses. This is a significant ritual for the local community, with large numbers participating.

A Visual Spectacle: The shrines are beautifully illuminated after dark. Hundreds of red lanterns cast a warm, soft glow on the intricate architecture, ornate carvings, and elaborate decorations. The flickering candlelight from the altars creates a mesmerizing and almost magical scene, making the deities appear even more vivid.
